Kiev, Ukraine. On 30 November 2013, the day after the dispersion of Euromaidan, Euromaidan organisers, aided by groups such as Svoboda, created “Self-defence of the Maidan” — their own police force for protecting protesters from police and providing security within the city.  The groups are divided up into “sotnias”.  The sotni take their name from a traditional form of Cossacks cavalry formation, and were also used in the Ukrainian People’s Army, Ukrainian Insurgent Army, Ukrainian National Army.
